Monitor Comprehension
Click or Clunk Strategy
Description: Students periodically check their understanding of text beginning first at the sentence level, then the paragraph level and finally self-monitoring on multiple pages of text.
Procedure:
1. Tell students that they will be learning ways to read more carefully. Instruct students that, during any reading assignment, when they come to:
· the end of a sentence, they should ask the question, “Did I understand this sentence?” If students understand the sentence, they say “Click!” and continue reading. If they do not understand, they say “Clunk!” and apply a fix-up strategy (see 4th Monitor Comprehension intervention) to correct the problem.
· the end of a paragraph, they should ask the question, “What did the paragraph say?” If they know the main idea(s) of the paragraph, students say “Click!”. If they do NOT, they say “Clunk!” and read paragraph over to highlight important points.
· the end of each page, they should ask the question, “What do I remember?” Apply the Click or Clunk strategy regarding recalling sequence of events or sufficient information.
2. Read through a sample passage with the intervention group. At the end of each sentence, paragraph, and page, “think aloud” as you model the use of the comprehension checks. Be sure to call out “Click!” or “Clunk!” and demonstrate the fix-up strategies.
3. Have students apply the “Click” or “Clunk” strategy first during guided reading sessions and then during independent reading assignments.
Please note: You may wish to create silent “Click/Clunk” signals (J or J on a post-it or in the margin.) Initially hearing the students, however, will allow you to evaluate if they are monitoring properly.
