Howard Elementary students in Mrs. Tegen’s first grade STARS (Students and Teachers Achieving Reading Success) class enjoyed an outdoor Language Experience lesson. The Language Experience Approach is used to supplement small group Leveled Literacy Instruction (LLI) and uses students’ experiences to create texts for reading. Howard Elementary has a large population of English Language Learners who are learning to read as they learn English, so this technique builds their skills along with students who need extra support with learning to read.
Amina, Ryder, Anastasiia, and London went on a short nature hike and recorded their observations. The emergent readers focused on the sight words they are learning, such as “we”, “can”, “see”. They also practiced stretching out words when writing to hear sounds and blends in words, such as: “bug”, “log”, “grass”, ”plants”, and “trees”. The students then orally shared while technology assisted in quickly producing texts for a Readers Theater, including students’ names and the sight word, “said”. Students verbally performed their adventure “The Nature Hike” off the printed text, which was created using their own words. Students received a printed copy of their paper book, “The Nature Hike”, to illustrate and take home to reread for fluency practice. Other Language Experience books are created periodically throughout the year.
Students were actively engaged with writing and reading, while using their own language to motivate and encourage learning for a real purpose.
