Title of Strategy: Spot and Dot
Description: This technique requires the students to identify the vowels in words in order to break the word into smaller and more easily decodable chunks/syllables.
Procedure:
Please note: If two vowels are adjacent to each other, first determine if they are a vowel team before dividing between them. The most common vowel teams are ai, ay, aw, ea, ee, ie, oa, oe, oi, oo, ou, ow, oy, ue. Suffixes and prefixes should also be kept together.

Procedure:
- Spot (look for) and dot (place a dot above) the vowels.
- Connect the dots.
- Look at the number of consonants between the vowels.
- If 2 consonants, break between the consonants.
- If 1 consonant, break before the consonant; if it doesn’t sound right, move over one letter.
